Twin Girls' Fantasy Bedroom Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-208 -- More Projects »
Dirk Blackman and his wife, Chris Purse, have twin six-year-old daughters, Rachel and Kate. The girls share a bedroom that isn't functioning to its fullest. The Blackman's want the small room for the twin girls to be a multifunctional space for playing, sleeping and storage.

Before The DilemmaSam Kivett discusses the bedroom with Dirk and Chris. Kivett and his design team of Charles Burbridge and Summer Baltzer need to change the color of the walls from "hospital blue" to something more inspirational, deal with a disorganized closet and replace the mismatched window treatments. They also need to add storage for clothes and toys that now fill messy plastic bins on the floor and an overstuffed, outdated dresser. The girls also need space to work on homework and art projects, as well as proper lighting to complete these tasks.

After The SolutionHere's how the design team transforms the room for the two girls:- The walls are painted with a base color of yellow then striped with an eye-catching pink. To create the freeform stripes, Kivett slides two three-inch rollers onto a regular size roller applicator with space in between to create the stripes.
- Baltzer decides to bring in a net canopy over their bunk beds to create a fort-like sleeping space. Since both girls like everything Egyptian, she embellishes the netting with felt cutouts of pyramids, palm trees and horses and attaches the pieces with safety pins.

Video: Burbridge shares how he embellished a mirror frame to make it fit in with the colorful theme. To save money on accessories, Burbridge transforms their plain mirror frame for under $20. He paints the frame with white and yellow paint and glues on plastic trinkets and beads. The finishing touch is an application of polyurethane and a sprinkle of glitter to make it sparkle.
The windows are dressed with inexpensive cotton curtains dyed to match the room's color palette. Blackout shades add more privacy.
The bins previously housed on the floor are moved into the closet and hidden behind another pair of dyed-to-match curtains.
New furniture pieces include an ample-sized dresser to hold all of their clothes, two white bookcases for storing books and toys and a table and chair set perfect for working on art projects or homework.
The lighting is addressed with a new lamp on the dresser, a clip light on each girl's bed and a hanging ceiling light redirected over their new work space.
